Biography

Mr Kumar is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in the treatment of upper limb conditions and general trauma. Since 2011 he has been involved in Medicolegal practice. He also takes part in the trauma on call rota at the Royal Lancaster infirmary and is a recognised trainer of junior doctors. 


He holds an LLM in Medical Law and Ethics from de Montfort University, Leicester. Mr Kumar’s other roles include performance assessment of doctors for the General Medical Council. Since 2019, he was selected to be a member of the Medicolegal committee of the British Orthopaedic Association. He undertakes instructions from defendant and claimant solicitors for clinical negligence work. If instructed, Mr Kumar provides independent and concise medical reports in a timely fashion. His medicolegal practice in the Northwest of England and he conducts clinics at Manchester, Bolton, Lytham and Lancaster.


He has extensive experience in the regulatory field. He has served as a specialist advisor to the CQC from 2014-2019. He also serves as an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh where he is also a member of the Faculty of Surgical training. Mr Kumar is a member of the AAC (Appointments Advisory committee) of the Royal College of Surgeons of England involved in the quality control towards the recruitment of consultants in various NHS Trusts in England and Wales.

More recently Mr Kumar has also been selected as a Regional Professional Advisor for the Northwest region by the Royal College of Surgeons of England and also as a member of the Specialty Board in Trauma & Orthopaedics, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He also has experience as a clinical assessor for the Practitioner Performance Advice in the performance assessment of doctors.


After training at the Mersey Deanery and the Welsh Orthopaedic training schemes, Mr Kumar became a Trauma & Orthopaedic fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. He also gained a post CCT fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the prestigious Shoulder and Elbow Unit at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. This post proved to be an educational experience and gave him wide exposure to a variety of shoulder and elbow conditions. He has also worked at the upper limb unit at Wrightington Hospital during the final year of his training. His term as a research fellow in hip fractures at the University of Leicester has given him the experience to analyse research summaries and arrive at meaningful conclusions. He specialises in disorders and injuries of the shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist.


Over the years, Mr Kumar has published many peer-reviewed journals on topics related to Trauma and Orthopaedics. He is also a recognised trainer of junior doctors. As a Hon. Lecturer at Lancaster University, he is involved the teaching of medical students.
